Description from the seller
Roman Bronze Anthropomorphic Appliqué – 2nd to 4th Century AD
A finely cast Roman bronze anthropomorphic appliqué depicting a stylized human face rendered in high relief within a rounded medallion. The facial features are boldly modelled, with prominent brows, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose and softly defined lips, characteristic of provincial Roman metalwork. An integral attachment element projects from the upper edge, while the plain reverse indicates the object was intended as a decorative mount for leather goods, wooden furniture, chests or ceremonial equipment. Such bronze appliqués served both ornamental and symbolic functions throughout the Roman Empire. The piece exhibits an attractive dark green to black patina together with minor mineral encrustations and surface wear consistent with considerable age.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: 6.3 × 4.2 × 1.7 cm
Weight: 67.9 g
Provenance: Acquired in Germany. From a German private collection assembled during the 1980s.
