Silver oord, struck in 1604 at Middelburg for the province of Zeeland. A rare date.

The portrait of stadtholder Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau makes these Zeeland oords particularly distinctive. Provincial coins with a portrait of an Orange stadtholder are exceptional, as such portrait coins were normally reserved for sovereign rulers, such as emperors, kings, dukes and counts. Zeeland represents a notable exception in this regard. Although Maurits died in 1625, his portrait remained on the Zeeland oords until 1671.
A scarce and sought-after date. The coin shows slight flaws of the strike. Nevertheless an attractive historical specimen of this striking Zeeland type.
