The theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony was intended to illustrate the struggle between good and evil in Maupassant's oeuvre. This theme is depicted here by Saint Anthony who, by holding up a cross, tries to resist his temptations. Charm appears before him in the form of a horse, which symbolizes strength and lust. Behind the horse stands an elephant, with the chalice of fornication on its back. A naked woman stands in the chalice, emphasizing the erotic character of the composition. The elephant in the background, with the phallic shape on its back, and the animals with their long legs that make them almost weightless, also symbolize the sexual arousal. Half hidden in the clouds in the background, the Escurial is represented, the embodiment of the temporal and spiritual order. The artist succeeds in leaving the spectator in uncertainty: is Saint Anthony strong enough to dispel his vision through his conjuring gesture and the rock of faith on which he rests, or will he be overrun by this caravan of sensuality that threatens him?
