Art Deco faience vase in cobalt blue with gold accents, 22.5 cm high and 17 cm wide, top diameter 11.8 cm, base diameter 12.1 cm, weight 1400 g, dating from 1930–1940, in excellent condition with minimal wear.
Description from the seller
Art Deco earthenware vase in cobalt blue glazed faience enhanced with gold fillets, made during the 1930s. By the balance of its proportions and the sobriety of its decoration, this piece perfectly illustrates the geometric aesthetic of Art Deco, where the purity of the volumes is highlighted by a refined contrast between the intensity of cobalt blue and the discreet shine of the gold highlights.
The vase features a baluster silhouette with generous shoulders, punctuated by a succession of rings and horizontal steps that rhythmically heighten its form. Its slightly flared neck rests on a simple plinth, while several gold fillets outline the different registers as well as the upper edge and the base. The cobalt blue glaze, deep and glossy, provides strong visual intensity and emphasizes the architecturally structured volumes of the whole.
The object is kept in very good overall condition. The earthenware shows no chips, cracks, or restoration. The gold fillets remain well present despite slight wear from use noticeable in places, in keeping with the piece’s age. The glaze retains all its brilliance, and a few tiny traces of firing or manufacturing testify to the artisanal process of origin.
During the 1920s and 1930s, many European manufacturers renewed their production by adopting streamlined forms inspired by modern architecture and the decorative arts. Monochrome enamels paired with metallic highlights then became emblematic of this period, prioritizing the quality of lines and the elegance of proportions over exuberant decoration. This vase fully aligns with this stylistic evolution that marks the golden age of Art Deco ceramics.
