Pair of Italian “gondola” chairs — Empire style — 20th century

Description

Elegant pair of Italian “gondola” chairs in Empire style, dating to the 20th century (early).

Made of solid wood, they feature the characteristic sweeping line of the curved backrest, with upholstered seat and backrest covered in red velvet. The harmonious proportions, artisanal craftsmanship, and traditional joinery testify to a quality production typical of Italian cabinetmaking of the period.

The structure retains a pleasant patina of age, enhanced by edging with decorative studs. The velvet upholstery appears to be later than the frame, but well executed and in good condition.

An elegant, timeless pair, ideal for a classic setting as well as as a high-end furnishing element in a contemporary context.

Conditions

The chairs are structurally solid and stable. The wood shows the natural patina of time with minor signs of use, small scratches, and light abrasions consistent with age.

The red velvet upholstery is overall in good condition. There is a small localized tear on the inner side of the seat of one chair, near the edging with decorative studs, easily repairable. At the back of one backrest there is a slight opening of the upholstery of about 2–3 cm.

In some points along the inner edging of the seat a few decorative studs are missing; the defect is limited to the inner part and does not affect the outer profile, which retains the complete edging and presents well aesthetically.

Overall the pair is in excellent conservation condition for the 19th century and could benefit only from a light conservative maintenance, such as a delicate waxing of the wood.
