Family heirloom – restored around 1950 – with documented wartime provenance
This elegant South German transitional commode was produced in the late 18th century (around 1800) and displays all the typical characteristics of the Louis XV / Louis XVI idiom: bombé front, curved legs, fine walnut and burl veneers, decorative marquetry, as well as an original, hand-cut marble top.
The commode comes from my grandmother’s family collection and was safeguarded in a cellar or storage room during the war years. Despite careful storage, the left side and a small area of the front sustained slight bomb fragment damage from nearby impacts.
These war scars were carefully stabilized and almost completely invisibly repaired by a skilled restorer in a restoration around 1950. The historical substance was preserved; only the damaged areas were added to. The restoration was carried out in a craftful, flawless manner with great respect for the original.
The piece is now in a stable, visually closed and authentically aged condition. The veneers, the case, and the marble top are largely original. The patina is coherent and reflects an age of over 200 years.
