Maximilian Peter Brandstätter (1917–2015) was a very well-known Austrian painter from Carinthia. He lived and worked throughout his life in Spittal an der Drau. He was an honorary citizen there and a recipient of the Golden Medal of Merit of the state of Carinthia. His particular passion was watercolor painting. His works are characterized by a soft, fluid yet expressive brushwork. Typical for him are Carinthian landscapes, Lake Millstatt, mountain motifs, and rural scenes.

The painting shows the typical, moodful hillside landscape for him and bears at the bottom right his characteristic signature with the year 95 (Peter Brandstätter 95).

At well-known auction houses, his watercolors fetch hammer prices depending on size between €200 and €500. Smaller studies or sketches sometimes start at around €120, while very large, representative motifs can bring in up to €700
