Ritratto Maschile, an oil on canvas portrait from Italy in the 18th century, attributed to the Italian School (19th century), measuring 118 × 91 cm, unsigned, sold with frame, and requiring restoration.
Description from the seller
Male Portrait with Letter and Flower – Oil on Canvas
Important male portrait from the Italian school, executed in oil on canvas in the first half of the nineteenth century. The work depicts a gentleman with an authoritative look, portrayed bust-length in front of an elegantly green draped curtain finely arranged. The face, characterized by strong features and framed by a light wig typical of the period, is rendered with psychological attention and notable expressive depth.
The subject wears formal attire enriched by an honorific decoration pinned to the chest. The right hand holds a letter, on which some writings are clearly discernible, a narrative element that adds further character to the scene. To the left of the figure appears a refined vase with flowers, a detail rich in color that enhances the composition and suggests an educated and aristocratic milieu.
The pictorial surface shows pronounced widespread craquelure across the entire canvas, consistent with the era and indicating complete originality. The work is preserved in its antique carved wooden frame, with floral motifs and gilding worn by time, but still of great charm.
A period portrait with strong presence, ideal for collectors and historical interiors.
