Hans Nickel (1916-1986) - Pferdeportrait

Hans Nickel was born on 29 December 1916 in the Sudetenland (Mährisch Lotschnau, Kreis Zwittau). He received a state scholarship and studied at the Art School in Brünn (Brno) under Professor Langer in church painting. He undertook study trips to southern European countries as well as Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland. During World War II he worked as a war painter in Poland, Russia, and France. Even after the war, the artist began an intense period of study again and mainly dealt with painters such as v. Zügel, Braith, and Mali. Afterwards he settled as a painter in Altdorf near Nürtingen (Baden-Württemberg), where he collaborated, among others, with Professor Lichtblau in Stuttgart. The artist has earned a great reputation with his animal subjects both at home and abroad. His main interest lies in rural scenes, which today, unfortunately, are being displaced more and more by advancing motoring. He has a knack like no other for conveying peasant life in a fascinating and lifelike way. He also used the names "Hans Costa", "Hand Bräuning" and "Hanauska".
