Description from the seller
“The Last Sun”
Oil on canvas
Signed, (artist not identified)
Period: 1976
Measurements: 72 x 62 cm
Canvas: 50 x 60 cm
Description
The work depicts an elderly man seated on a low wall, captured in a moment of quiet and contemplation. The figure, slightly bent and wrapped in a long dark overcoat, dominates the foreground of the composition. The face marked by age and the raised hand confer a strong expressive presence to the character, almost narrative.
Behind him opens a wide hilly landscape, built through broad fields of green, blue, and ochre. In the distance emerges the profile of a small village gathered around a tall bell tower, an element that introduces perceptual depth and enhances the sense of distance and solitude of the figure.
Particularly successful is the treatment of light, which strikes the elderly man from the side, making the white hair, the face, the hands, and some folds of the garment stand out against the deep shadow areas. The painter uses a strong chiaroscuro, almost theatrical, while in the landscape the brushwork becomes freer, more synthetic and expansive.
The lower part presents a more lively and gestural painterly matter, with short overlapping touches of color that suggest grasses and spontaneous vegetation.
From a stylistic point of view the work can be placed within Italian figurative painting of the 20th century, with a research that combines realism, painterly synthesis and luminous expressiveness. The author’s interest does not seem directed at minutiae in description, but at building an atmosphere: the old age of the man, the silence of the countryside, and the distant village transform a everyday scene into a reflection on the passage of time.
Subject: elderly male figure in a hilly landscape with a village
Genre: figurative painting / rural life scene / landscape
Style: post-impressionist figurative, characterized by concise brushwork and strong luminosity contrasts.

The work presents in good overall state of preservation, compatible with its age.
Overall, conservation conditions coherent with the age and the technique used.
