Pair of Portuguese wall corbels with winged figures, carved wood, painted and gilded. Pair of Portuguese wall corbels, crafted in carved wood, painted in a brownish tone and partially gilded, dating from the last quarter of the 19th century, approximately 1870–1900. They feature carved tops with a wavy profile and gilded edges, supported by winged figures traditionally identified as angels. The figures have heads crowned with vegetal motifs, open wings, and bodies integrated into an ornate architectural composition with volutes, scrolls, acanthus leaves, and hanging motifs. The decoration draws on the repertories of grotesques and caryatids from the Renaissance and Mannerism, situating the pieces within the historicist neo-Renaissance or neomannerist taste, with some neobaroque influence in the expressiveness of the scrolls and in the sculptural treatment of the carving. The contrast between the brown painting and the gilded accents highlights the relief of the decoration and gives the pieces a pronounced ornamental presence. Suitable for displaying small sculptures, religious images, vases, or decorative objects. Surface wear, small flaws in painting and gilding, marks and signs of use consistent with age.
