Description from the seller
Boldoot is one of the best-known and oldest perfume and cosmetic brands in Dutch history. The brand began in Amsterdam and has grown into a true institution.
1. From pharmacy to perfume empire (1789)
Jacobus Cornelis Boldoot began on May 1, 1789 a pharmacy on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam. He sold powders, salves and a self-developed elixir based on alcohol to promote health. This mixture turned out to smell wonderful and grew into the famous Boldoot Eau de Cologne.
Court supplier and Royal fragrance bottles
Boldoot was a pioneer in marketing. At special royal events — such as the jubilee, the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina (1898) or the birth of Princess Juliana (1909) — the brand issued special, beautifully designed commemorative bottles (sometimes with tin caps in the shape of a crown). Boldoot became court supplier to no fewer than five European courts: the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Boldoot led Amsterdam with modern techniques:
In 1881 Boldoot was one of the very first companies in Amsterdam with a telephone connection.
In 1882 they already switched to electricity/motor engines for production.
Boldoot grew so fast that the company eventually owned as many as 16 buildings on the Singel and Langestraat, later building a large factory on Haarlemmerweg and opening its own museum/store in Kalverstraat called "In 't geurighe Rooske".
