Description from the seller

This exceptional pair of antique fire dogs is a striking example of functional decorative objects from the turn-of-the-century period.
The turban on antique French fire dogs (chenets) stands for the historical fashion phenomenon of Orientalism and points to the fascination with the culture of the Ottoman Empire and Asia. Orientalism and Exoticism Trend: In the 18th and 19th centuries, "Turkish" and "Moor" motifs were very popular in European art and decorative arts.
Decoration: The busts were not meant to represent any specific political or religious triumph, but served as exotic room ornaments for grand salons.
The faces with turbans acted as stylish focal points at the open fire. Beautiful antique fire dogs made of cast iron from the 19th century (also known as fire dogs or chenets).
The craftsmanship and casting quality indicate continental European manufacture, probably from France, Belgium or the Franco-German border region (Lorraine/Saarland).
To be used in old and modern fireplaces as decorative objects in the home, as bookends or other—ideas are limitless.
The right figure has a small crack on the back of the base on each side, but this does not impair function; sturdy, solid stand.
