The opal is a mineral from the mineral class of “oxides and hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (similar to glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein filling or bumpy formation.
Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones.
The word opal was borrowed from Latin opalus or Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably goes back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used to denote various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya.
Opals were already considered exceptionally valuable gemstones in antiquity, sometimes valued even higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote: ‘[…] it has a fire of its own, refined like the carbuncle, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an absolutely incredible mix of light.’
