In 1908 Monet traveled with his second wife Alice (she died in 1911) to Venice. He painted there a series of thirty-seven iconic monuments. A few days after his return to Paris, Galerie Bernheim-Jeune acquired twenty-eight of the thirty-seven works. "Venise" opened on May 28, 1912 and was met with much acclaim.

'In 1908 reisde Monet met zijn tweede vrouw Alice (zij overleed in 1911) naar Venetië.  Hij schilderde er een reeks van zevenendertig iconische monumenten. Enkele dagen na zijn terugkeer in Parijs verwierf Galerie Bernheim-Jeune achtentwintig van de zevenendertig werken. "Venise" opende op 28 mei 1912 en werd met veel lof ontvangen.
