The device was used as a gun camera (shooting camera).
Instead of firing ammunition, it recorded a film during a training exercise. After the exercise, it could be evaluated: how the shooter aimed, whether the lead was correct, how the target was tracked, when the trigger was pressed.
Such devices were used both in training aircraft crews and on ground weapons.
The term Type 89 refers in the Japanese nomenclature to the year 2589 of the Imperial Era, corresponding to 1929, although many Type-89 devices were manufactured into the 1930s and 1940s.
