Description from the seller
Relief of Henry IV's Return to France
Henry IV, born Henry de Bourbon, was the founder of the Bourbon dynasty of France, reigning from August 2, 1589 to May 14, 1610. Originally a Huguenot, he converted to Catholicism to inherit the French throne. During his reign, Henry IV, through his outstanding military talent and skillful manipulation of opposing forces, successfully ended more than thirty years of religious wars and signed the Edict of Nantes, ending the Huguenot Wars. His rule was widely sympathized with and mourned by the people, who praised him as "Henry the Wise King" and posthumously honored him as "Henry the Great." Furthermore, he wanted to beautify the royal residences, so he undertook large-scale construction projects at the Louvre and Fontainebleau Palace and initiated many urban planning projects. Although new tensions arose both domestically and internationally towards the end of his reign, Henry IV, as the founder of the French Bourbon dynasty, had a profound impact on French history.12
