Description from the seller

A beautiful 18th c. antique russian icon, depicting the Annunciation of the Mother of God.

The Archangel Gabriel is shown as a winged figure standing dynamically on the left. He wears flowing turquoise or light blue garments and is depicted mid-stride. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing and speech, delivering his message.

The Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is shown seated on a dark throne or chair on the right side of the composition. She wears a traditional dark, modest veil or maphorion. Her head is slightly bowed, and her hands are raised in a gesture of humble acceptance and reverence.

The scene is set indoors, framed by a soft backdrop and a draped red curtain on the upper right, which signifies an interior room. Between the two figures sits a small table or stand supporting an open book, referencing the prophecy of the Incarnation.
