The Obey Icon Face is the most versatile and most consistent image in Shepard's work for over 30 years.

"The Obey Icon Face evolved from late 1995 to early 1996 from the desire to move away from an association with André the Giant and toward a more universal image of ‘Big Brother’ (as in George Orwell's 1984 image). I was fascinated by the power of the simplified graphic approach of the Russian constructivist posters and I wanted an icon that would fit into work of that style. At the beginning of my street art campaign, I had generated and proliferated propaganda using pop culture associations, but I had become more interested in commenting on propaganda with art having a direct stylistic parallel. The concept behind Obey is to provoke people who typically complain about life’s circumstances but do not question things more deeply, to face their own obedience. Obey is a very sarcastic form of reverse psychology." -Shepard Fairey
