French Vermeil Vinaigrette – Boar's Head Hallmark – c. 1838–1900

An elegant 19th-century French vermeil vinaigrette of rectangular form, beautifully decorated with finely hand-engraved scrolling foliate borders surrounding engine-turned panels to both sides. The central cartouches have been left vacant, making the piece particularly attractive.

The vinaigrette opens to reveal a finely pierced and gilded grille featuring an intricate bird amongst flowers and foliage. The original gilding remains well preserved, with a warm patina developed over more than a century.

The piece is stamped with the French boar's head hallmark, the guarantee mark used on small silver objects of 800/1000 standard from 1838 onwards, confirming its French origin.
