Osvaldo Provvidone (1920 – 2013) Italian painter. Born in Novara, he was a visual artist able to stand out in the Italian contemporary art scene through a continuous and passionate stylistic research. His formation traces back to the fervent post-war period: he studied at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, guided by two masters of the caliber of Felice Casorati and Enrico Paolucci, the latter elected as his direct guide. After teaching in Turin at the State Institute of Figurine and Fashion (then directed by Italo Cremona) and later in high schools and technical institutes in his hometown Novara, Provvidone fully embraced an exhibition activity. From the sixties he began to collect notable recognitions, among which the victory of the second prize for tempera at the I Roman Biennale of Contemporary Art in 1967 stands out.

From the point of view of poetics and technique, starting in the fifties Provvidone's art underwent a decisive turn: the artist moved away from figurative rigor to an utopian exploration of abstract spatiality. His style is defined through a very personal painting of sign and gesture, often described by critics as a true sumptuous "chromatic magma", capable of translating emotional interiority into vibrations on the canvas. Conceiving painting as a stream in constant becoming, Provvidone alternated works of extreme delicacy and tonal refinement with creations characterized by strong material resorption and irregular fields. His insatiable experimental drive led him to surpass the boundaries of oil and tempera on canvas, exploring graphics, mixed media on cardboard, and even venturing into textile art and the integration of artworks within aesthetic-architectural contexts.

His works have been historicized, acquired, or enhanced through exhibitions sponsored by institutions in his territory: the Municipality of Novara celebrated his heritage with high-profile shows, such as the one hosted in the Salone dell'Arengo del Broletto in 2002 and the retrospectives at Spazio aperto all'Arte, consolidating his role as a vibrant and autonomous voice of Italian contemporary art.

DESCRIPTION

The composition presents itself as an autonomous and material exploration of an interior landscape, an emotional topography where forms never crystallize into defined objects, but remain in a perpetual state of flow and energy. Realized at a crucial moment in Provvidone's career, just after the definitive break from the more rigorously figurative influences of his training, this work fully embodies the adoption of the informal language.

The composition is structured on a dynamic fragmentation of overlapped and interlocked planes, where bold masses of color dialogue and clash. A dark, deep vertical axis, dominated by intense purple and burnt brown, anchors the right side of the composition, while on the left and bottom broad fields of golden ocher, bright yellow, and orange extend, interrupted by blocks of gray-lavender and cream white. The technique is extremely gestural and tactile, with visible brushstrokes alternating between density and transparency. Particularly interesting is the play of sgraffito and very thin, almost filiform lines that cross the painted surface, scraping the upper layers to reveal the underlying ones or adding a delicate airy mesh-like structure, as seen in the central-left area, almost evoking a fragile network or a geometrized figure dissolving.

The work fits perfectly into Provvidone's mature poetics, characterized by a search for abstract spatiality that eschews superficial decoration to become visceral expression. The work embodies the idea of painting as a "chromatic magma" described by critics, a dynamic flow in constant becoming where color is not just pigment but emotional matter vibrating on the surface. In this period, the artist reinforces his identity as a colorist, pushing to the limit the color's ability to convey moods and energy, alternating moments of extreme delicacy with sudden material resentments. CONDITION REPORT

Good overall condition. The work features vivid and clearly legible chroma and brushwork, with a slight waviness of the support at the lower-right corner (see photo). This does not in the least affect the overall aesthetic rendering.
