Coin issued as Notgeld by the Prussian province of Westphalia during the German hyperinflation of 1923. The obverse features the portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797-1848), one of the most important writers and poets of German literature, shown in profile with refined sculptural style and surrounded by her name and the dates of her birth and death. The reverse shows the prancing horse, a traditional emblem of Westphalia, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the name of the province, the face value of 50 Mark and the date of issue. The specimen preserves an excellent state of conservation, with fully defined reliefs, homogeneous surfaces and an attractive original satin sheen, qualities fully in line with the MS64 grade awarded by NGC. This issue is part of the renowned Westphalia Notgeld series, minted to address the shortage of cash during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, constituting an important historical testimony of one of the most significant monetary episodes of 20th-century Germany.
