A Scandinavian gentleman’s personal box dating to c.1870–1900, crafted in patinated hardwood with a solid silver (925) lid featuring a hand-cut pastoral scene of cows, sheep, and a seated shepherd, with mother-of-pearl inlay, measuring 8.5 cm by 4.5 cm by 2 cm and in good antique condition.
Description from the seller
A rare and highly decorative Scandinavian gentleman’s personal box dating to the late 19th century (circa 1870–1900).
The box is crafted from beautifully patinated hardwood and finished with solid sterling silver (925), confirmed by silver testing. The lid features a finely hand-cut silver pastoral scene depicting a cow, sheep and seated shepherd, complemented by a delicate mother-of-pearl inlay beneath the scene. The rounded silver end caps give the box an elegant and refined appearance.
Although the exact original purpose cannot be established with certainty, the size and construction suggest it was intended as a gentleman’s personal box, possibly for snuff or other small personal items. Such finely crafted examples are rarely encountered on today’s market.
Dimensions
* Length: 8.5 cm
* Width: 4.5 cm
* Height: 2 cm
