Sowei helmet masks, also known as Bundu masks, originating from the Mende people of Sierra Leone. These masks occupy a unique position within African tribal art, because they are worn exclusively by women of the Sande society during ceremonial initiation rituals. The mask embodies the traditional Mende beauty ideal and spiritual serenity:
Face: Finely carved facial features with characteristic narrow slit eyes and a restrained, small mouth.
Headdress: A very detailed, geometric herringbone motif that leads to a central hexagonal top knob. Residues of lighter pigment (possibly kaolin) accentuate the deep grooves of the hairlines.
Details: Equipped with the original, symmetrical drill holes in the earlobes for jewelry and holes along the lower edge for the attachment of the ceremonial raffia costume.
Condition and Patina
The mask is in good, used condition with a beautiful dark, glossy patina. On the inside, the authentic, hand-made dowel- and gouge-work are clearly visible. The lower edge shows characteristic wear spots as a result of traditional use and aging patina.
