Description from the seller
“River Landscape” French School, Impressionism, early 20th century – France
Delicate oil on canvas, executed in an impressionist manner, that depicts a cheerful and peaceful natural landscape, whose river flows smoothly from the foreground to the background of the scene. On both sides, along the riverbanks, lush trees grow formed from quick, visible, expressive brushstrokes. This same brushstroke is found in the body of water, which seems to reflect the light of the sky and capture the movement of the current. The artist, using a quick and loose brushstroke, manages to capture the changing light of the landscape, and the chosen perspective adds dynamism to the composition. To be noted is the frame, a work of art in itself, with excellent carving, vegetal motifs in the corners, and gilding.
Impressionism, born in France in the last third of the 19th century, was an art movement defined essentially through painting. It was characterized mainly by pursuing as its ultimate aim the capturing of the light of a specific moment in the works, for which it relied on a disaggregated, material, and very rapid brushstroke.
Thanks to technical and scientific advances, which allowed the creation of new pigments, the use of pure colors also spread. With them a purity and saturation of colors unimaginable until then were achieved. Complementary colors also became fundamental, together with the type of brushstroke and the absence of drawing altogether. For this same reason, shadows went from including black in their composition to being called “colored shadows,” mixing complementary colors to darken them without the need for black. This also helped create a greater sense of depth. This work perfectly exemplifies all the characteristics of the style.
