Antique Victorian Fitted Sewing Box – Coromandel Veneer, Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, Working Lock & Key – 19th Century
A beautiful antique Victorian fitted sewing/vanity box, veneered in richly striped coromandel, with fine mother-of-pearl and white-metal floral inlay to the lid.
The interior retains its original red velvet fitted lining, arranged with compartments for sewing implements and notions, a small lidded section, and a padded central section. The underside of the lid houses a bevelled mirror. The box retains its original lock with working key.
Dating to the mid-to-late 19th century, this is a genuine antique in the tradition of the fitted Victorian work box, practical, decorative, and beautifully made, reflecting the quality of domestic craftsmanship of the period.
Genuine age-related wear commensurate with the piece's history. Mirror shows foxing/oxidation typical of its age. Velvet lining shows wear and fraying to some edges. Some veneer lifting/loss to corners (see photos). Lock and key present and functional. Sold as found, no restoration undertaken.
