Description from the seller

Chokwe Mask – Angola. This remarkable mask stands out for an uncommon typology and a particularly assertive character. The face with its strong volumes, marked by deep brow ridges, a angular nose and a mouth widely slightly opened revealing a finely sculpted dentition, gives it a striking presence. The geometric scarifications, the precisely carved coiffure, as well as the original metal rings in the ears further reinforce its authenticity. The beautiful dark brown patina, glossy and deeply nourished by use, testifies to a long ritual life.

Among the Chokwe, masks accompanied initiation ceremonies, prestigious dances, and manifestations related to ancestors. While this piece fits within the stylistic repertoire of this great Central African people, its singular expression and sculptural treatment clearly distinguish it from the more common models. Preserved with its ancient peripheral fittings, this specimen is a work of character, rare in its physiognomy and highly representative of the richness of traditional Chokwe art.
