Kholuka Mask - Yaka - DR Congo

Among the Yaka of the DRC, the Kholuka masks occupied an essential place in initiation rites and community ceremonies. Associated with ritual societies, they intervened in masked dances intended to transmit ancestral knowledge, protect the village, and reinforce social cohesion. The zoomorphic face, polychrome pigments, and spectacular shapes symbolize the spiritual forces of the bush, the ancestors, and the invisible powers linked to fertility, hunting, and initiatory transmission.
