Bronze Age arrowhead, cast in bronze, with a double-edged blade measuring 10.5 cm in length and 2.9 cm in width, featuring a waisted grip and a tri-pointed finial with curved horns, patinated with encrustations and minor edge chips; dating to circa 1200–600 BC; provenance Ex. London Collection with private collection provenance, acquired in 2000; authenticity Original/official; condition Good.
Description from the seller
A fine Bronze Age arrowhead cast from bronze featuring a double-edged long blade tapering towards the point. The wide, flattened midrib runs parallel down the centre. Towards the end, the blade slightly narrows forming the waisted grip finishing with a tri-pointed finial, consisting of curved horns projecting on either side of the narrow tang. Patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Minor chips to the edges of the blade and one of the horns.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements: (circa) L 10.5cm x W 2.9cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990 - present.
