Presentation: Loose, unframed and unstretched canvas Be Different Anyway is a large original mixed-media painting by British contemporary animal artist Samantha Biddle. Seven lovebirds gather along a branching perch, surrounded by sweeping colour, light and layered handwritten marks. Most sit together in the expected way, watching and quietly judging, while one bird chooses to hang upside down. To the others this may look odd. To the bird himself, it feels perfectly natural. He is not performing or deliberately trying to be different, he is simply free enough to be himself. The painting explores neurodivergence and the experience of seeing, feeling and moving through the world differently. Its message is not about forcing yourself to fit in or being different for effect. It recognises that another person’s natural way of being may make complete sense from inside their own experience. Words and intuitive marks are woven through the painting, supporting its themes of freedom, judgement and self-acceptance. Deep violet and blue move into warm coral, gold and light, giving the work a sense of movement and possibility. Playful at first glance and more reflective beneath the surface, Be Different Anyway celebrates individuality without treating difference as something that needs to be corrected.
