École espagnole (XVIII) - Vierge des Douleurs

Interesting religious painting created in oil on canvas, belonging to the Spanish school of the eighteenth century. The work depicts the Virgin of Sorrows, one of the Marian iconographies most widespread within Spanish devotional art.

Mary is shown in half-length, hands clasped in prayer and head inclined, displaying a restrained expression of sadness, contemplation, and resignation. She wears a reddish-toned tunic covered by a wide dark blue mantle, while a light veil delicately frames the face.

Over her chest appears a sword, an iconographic attribute directly related to Simeon's prophecy — “a sword will pierce through your soul” — and a symbol of the Virgin's profound pain at Christ's Passion and death. This element clearly identifies the representation as a Virgin of Sorrows or Mater Dolorosa.

The head is surrounded by a soft golden halo that stands out against the neutral dark background. The absence of other narrative elements concentrates attention entirely on the figure and reinforces the intimate, spiritual, and meditative character of the composition.

From a stylistic point of view, the painting is within the Baroque tradition of Spanish religious painting, still fully current during the eighteenth century. The composition is characterized by sobriety, symmetry, and iconographic clarity, with particular attention to the facial expression and the gesture of the hands.

The treatment of the drapery is especially decorative. The different blues of the mantle create broad folds that structure the composition, while the pinkish and reddish tones of the sleeves and tunic add warmth to the whole. The contrast between these colors and the dark background allows the figure to acquire a monumental presence despite the intimate nature of the scene.

The work responds to the type of images historically destined for chapels, convents, churches, and private shrines, conceived as objects of contemplation, prayer, and private devotion.
