Lega African mask with the distinctive feature of having four eyes. None of these traditional masks is meant to inspire fear, to frighten or to terrorize non-initiates. It is nevertheless said that, in ancient practices, this type of mask was worn during circumcision ceremonies by an initiant of middle rank in order to keep women and children at a distance; thus, the four carved eyes are not incidental and therefore enhance the wearer's power of visibility and surveillance.
