Description from the seller

Georg Dokoupil – 3 invitation cards – 1982–2008

What is offered is a set of invitation cards from three of the artist Georg Dokoupil’s exhibitions, from 1983, 2008 and 1982:

- ‘Portraits’, Galerie Paul Maenz, Cologne, 1983
- ‘Movie and TV Paintings’, Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zürich, 2008
- ‘Neue Kölner Schule’, Galerie Paul Maenz, Cologne, 1982

On the card for the exhibition ‘Portraits’ (1983) at Galerie Paul Maenz there is a portrait of Dokoupil as a ‘clown’, wrapped in fog, among paint pots and stretcher bars in his studio at Im Klapperhof, Cologne. The portrait appears to be a parody of the artist, inspired by impulses from above. The card is offered with the accompanying loose inlay sheet containing the exhibition dates.

The second card is the invitation for the exhibition ‘Movie and TV Paintings’ (2008) at Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zürich. The exterior of the folded card shows an image of an inkjet print, entitled ‘Un Chien Andalou’. The work is part of a series that directly references film and television, in which Dokoupil prints scenes from films or TV images as sequences on canvas.

The third card comes from the solo exhibition ‘Neue Kölner Schule’ (1982) at Galerie Paul Maenz, Cologne. On the single-sided card the invitation text is printed in red letters on white, pitched diagonally across the surface. A striking detail is a flaw in the letter ‘n’ of the word ‘eingeladen’, of which a portion is missing – something that occurs on all the cards, by the way.

The title ‘Neue Kölner Schule’ can be read as an ironic reference to the new painting, the ‘Neue Wilde’ and the artists’ group ‘Mülheimer Freiheit’, of which Dokoupil was a member, together with Walter Dahn, Peter Bömmels, Gerard Kever, Gerhard Naschberger and Hans Peter Adamski. In the early 1980s, during the wave of new painting and the so-called ‘Hunger nach Bildern’, they publicly emerged under the name Mülheimer Freiheit, named after the street in Cologne where their shared studio was located.
