Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist Woodblock Ritual Sheet – Sacred Offerings & Auspicious Symbols – late - Paper - Mongolia - late 19th and beginning of 20th century

Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist Woodblock Ritual Sheet – Sacred Offerings & Auspicious Symbols – late 19th and beginning of 20th century An unusual antique Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist ritual woodblock print, traditionally attributed to Mongolia and the late 19th century. The work consists of a single elongated sheet of paper measuring approximately 23 × 7 cm, printed with a remarkable sequence of Buddhist ritual, offering and auspicious images arranged in individual rectangular compartments. The composition is organised in two horizontal registers, each containing a succession of different sacred motifs. These include ritual vessels, lotus-based emblems, precious offerings, flaming or jewel-like forms and other symbolic objects associated with the visual and ceremonial traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Several of the individual images appear to be accompanied by small inscriptions or identifying marks. The systematic arrangement suggests that the sheet was created for a religious or ritual purpose, rather than simply as decoration. Sheets of this type formed part of the broader material culture of Tibetan Buddhism and could serve as visual representations of sacred offerings, ritual attributes and auspicious objects. The printing technique appears consistent with traditional woodblock printing, extensively used throughout Tibet and Mongolia for the reproduction of Buddhist texts, prayers, ritual diagrams and sacred images. Particularly interesting is the survival of the original printing irregularities: differences in ink density and clarity between the individual compartments reveal the handmade character of the production process. Origin: Mongolia / Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist tradition Period: attributed to late 19th and beginning of 20th century Object: Buddhist ritual / offering sheet Technique: woodblock print Material: paper Subject: sacred offerings, ritual and auspicious symbols Dimensions: approx. 23 × 7 cm Number of sheets: 1 Provenance: acquired from a specialised Asian art gallery The manuscript is preserved in authentic antique and used condition, showing substantial traces of age and historical handling. There are visible folds, creases, staining, discoloration, rubbing, irregularities and wear along the edges. The printing varies in intensity across the sheet, with some images considerably clearer than others. These characteristics are consistent with the age, printing technique and historical use of the object. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. An intriguing example of Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist printed ritual material, particularly interesting for collectors of Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism, early Asian woodblock printing, Buddhist ritual objects and works on paper. The manuscript will be carefully packed and protected for shipping.
