Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist Amulet Manuscript – Woodblock Print – Mongolia – late 19th and beginning of 20th century
An interesting and uncommon Mongolian Buddhist manuscript woodblock print amulet, originating from Mongolia and dating approximately to the end of the 19th century.
This elongated single-page manuscript belongs to the Mongolian–Tibetan Buddhist tradition. It contains Tibetan script together with Buddhist ritual and symbolic diagrams, including geometric forms and sacred imagery. Such printed manuscript sheets were traditionally associated with Buddhist devotional, ritual and protective practices.
The manuscript was produced using the traditional woodblock printing technique on paper. Its elongated format follows the traditional style of Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhist manuscript leaves.
The illustrated section contains several interesting symbolic elements and diagrams alongside the Buddhist text. These may have had a protective, ritual or talismanic purpose, although the exact meaning would require specialist translation and study of the text.
The manuscript is preserved in old and used condition, showing considerable signs of age and traditional handling, including discoloration, staining, creases, worn edges, small tears and minor losses. P
