Rare cantharos with black glaze
Greater Greece, 4th century BCE
Description:
Rare fine ceramic cantharos entirely covered with a deep, bright black glaze, featuring an elegant deep bowl with slightly outward-sloping walls, resting on a small grooved annular foot.
The vessel is distinguished by its two very tall vertical ribbon handles, symmetrically placed, which originate at the lower part of the bowl and rise well above the rim, forming large arched loops. This slender silhouette gives the vase a remarkable plastically presence.
Under the belly runs an incised frieze of small oblique ribbons, placed immediately above the foot and constituting the main decorative element of this black-glazed piece. Faint concentric lines also emphasize the upper part of the bowl.
