Description from the seller
THERE IS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1
With this square-format work, Medsan conjures Eva-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion — the violet and green mecha imagined by Hideaki Anno and the Gainax studio — at the heart of a ruined Gothic cathedral, overgrown with ivy and foliage. Under the broken arch, a tiny figure in a pilot suit, Shinji Ikari, faces the giant suspended in the sky. The mashup crosses Japanese mecha iconography with Western sacred architecture, in the tradition of Caspar David Friedrich’s romantic ruins and Piranesi’s archaeological landscapes.
The treatment is that of a generous oil painting: visible impasto on the armor plates, a swirling brushstroke in the clouds that directly evokes Van Gogh’s Starry Night, dull glazes on the stone. The palette contrasts iridescent purples and acidic greens of Eva with bluish-gray stone, emerald foliage, and the pale light of sunset. The composition is strictly symmetrical, framed by the Gothic arch and its two quatrefoils, which enclose the colossus like a stained glass window would encase a saint’s figure. Down at the center, the cartouche Medsan signs the work in vermilion red.
The device is explicitly religious, and that is where the work speaks: Evangelion has always fused war machinery with biblical symbolism, and Medsan pushes the reading to the limit by placing the mecha in the place of Christ in majesty on a tympanum. The ruins overgrown with vegetation speak to the aftermath — humanity erased, nature returning, the metal idol still standing. The figure of Shinji with his back to us, tiny, turns the viewer into a witness to ambiguous adoration.
A piece that is both monumental and contemplative, ideal for bringing a touch of pop mysticism and anime culture to a collector’s interior committed to the bridges between classical painting and contemporary imaginaries.

About the Workshop:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists around a living, plural contemporary creation. Set up as a true artistic production space, the workshop operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, rough art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
