AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Collection of 5 antique jewelry boxes – beveled glass, engraved décor and gilded metal – Napoléon III – 19th century

Very handsome ensemble of five small antique jewelry boxes and display boxes, bringing together several particularly decorative variants of the glass and gilded metal boxes popular in France in the second half of the 19th century.

The set is remarkable for the variety of models while maintaining a very cohesive look: thick beveled glass, finely worked metal mounts, floral motifs, ornate feet, an old interior and a multicolored architectural image under glass.

These small boxes were intended to hold jewelry, rings, souvenirs or small precious objects and also served as true decorative items for a dressing table or display cabinet.

The collection comprises five different examples.

1. Rectangular beveled-glass box with engraved floral decoration

Charming small rectangular box whose lid consists of a thick beveled glass pane, adorned at the center with a delicate engraved and frosted floral motif.

The gilded metal mount is finely worked and features a decorative edge and a small front clasp.

The interplay between the transparency of the glass, the white floral decoration and the warm patina of the mount gives it great delicacy.

Dimensions: about 6 × 4.5 × 3.5 cm.
Original lining

2. Large display box on elaborately worked feet – pink interior

Very appealing rectangular box resting on four tall, richly worked feet.

The sides feature abundant raised vegetal ornamentation characteristic of the historicist taste of the Napoléon III period.

The lid is made of a substantial beveled glass pane.

The interior seems to have been added later.
It is one of the most decorative boxes in the collection.

Dimensions: about 9.5 × 6 × 6.5 cm.

3. Souvenir box with architectural view under glass

Small rectangular box with rounded corners, topped by a curved glass pane protecting a polychrome architectural view depicting a grand neoclassical building.

The drawing, animated by small figures and vegetation, fully belongs to the 19th-century tradition of souvenir objects.

The gilded metal mount features a finely repoussé decoration.

The original feet are no longer present.

Dimensions: about 6.5 × 4.5 × 3.5 cm.

4. Small square box with rich raised ornament

Elegant small square box in gilded metal, featuring on its four sides a rich relief of scrolls, foliage and cartouches.

It rests on four small ornate feet and has a thick beveled glass lid.

Its miniature architecture and abundant ornamentation make it a true small display piece.

Dimensions: about 5 × 5 × 5.5 cm.

5. Important five-faced display box in beveled glass

The most spectacular piece in the collection.
This almost cubical box is built around wide thick beveled glass panels, joined by a fine gilded metal frame.

The hinged lid itself consists of a substantial beveled panel.

The facets of the glass catch the light particularly well and give the object the appearance of a real little display case intended to showcase jewelry or precious keepsakes.

The interior retains some old textile fittings but will require restoration

Dimensions: about 8.5 × 8.5 × 6.5 cm.
