Beautiful Russian Orthodox icon, often called the “Monthly Icon” or Menaion, probably created in the 19th century.
Egg tempera and gold highlights on a wooden panel, featuring a liturgical calendar illustrated with numerous scenes and saints arranged in registers.
The decoration is distinguished by rich polychromy, a luminous gold background, and an ornamental frame with geometric and floral motifs.
Some scenes notably depict the Elevation of the Holy Cross, saints, martyrs, monks and Orthodox bishops. Inscriptions in Old Cyrillic.
