Description from the seller
Chinese porcelain vase with coral-red decoration – Republic period (1912–1949)
Fine Chinese porcelain vase from the Republic period (ca. 1912–1949), executed in an elegant baluster form with a long, slender neck and a gracefully lobed rim. The vase is decorated in a warm coral-red (iron-red) palette, combined with subtle gold accents on a clear white porcelain ground.
The scene depicts a dignified, long-haired scholar or high official, dressed in a richly decorated robe and holding a ceremonial staff with a banner. Beside him stands a young servant who respectfully offers him a blooming branch. In the background are a pine tree, garden rocks, and an elegant balustrade. Such motifs are derived from traditional Chinese literati and good-luck symbolism and symbolize respect, wisdom, a long life, and prosperity. The combination of the scholar and the youthful attendant also signifies the transfer of knowledge and the continuity of the Confucian tradition.
The decoration is painted with great precision and is characterized by refined line work and a harmonious application of coral-red enamel, a decorative technique particularly favored during the late Qing and Republic periods.
Brand
The base bears a red four-character mark:
乾隆年製 (Qianlong Nian Zhi)
Translation:
"Made during the Qianlong period."
This is an apocryphal Qianlong mark: a tribute to the famous Qianlong Emperor (1736–1795), as was frequently applied to high-quality porcelain from the Republic period. The mark does not date the piece, but references the style and tradition of the Qing imperial manufactories.
