IKEA - Front Design - Tripod floor lamp - PS 2009 Svarva - Birch - Vintage

This IKEA PS SVARVA floor lamp is an absolute design classic from the iconic IKEA PS 2009 collection.

The lamp was designed by the four female top designers of the renowned Swedish collective Front Design (Anna Lindgren, Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Katja Pettersson).

Front Design wanted to create a lamp with a "strong personality" that feels like a friend quietly looking over your shoulder while you read. They drew inspiration from traditional woodturning (one of the oldest decorative techniques).

Because you normally cannot bend a turned wooden pole, they devised a trick. They cut the turned pole into loose, bead-like segments of solid beech wood. These wooden beads are then slid over a curved steel inner tube. This created the unique effect of an asymmetrical, undulating wooden construction that rises in a smooth curve from the floor, without a heavy traditional tripod or thick straight base being required.

The white beads and segments are made of white lacquered, solid beech wood.

The shade is made of linen and is still original, but it shows signs of use as visible in the photos.

The special thing about the construction is that the shade at the top of the steel tube is flexible and adjustable, allowing you to subtly direct the light.

The beads show light signs of wear on the paint, but no distracting damage.
