Viking-age iron sword, 9th–10th century – two-edged blade with hollow ground and two-piece pommel
For sale is an exceptional Viking-age iron sword with a fully preserved scabbard and a characteristic two-piece pommel construction.
The sword features a broad, two-edged blade with a clearly recognizable hollow ground. The blade shows a corrosion surface developed over centuries with individual material losses and smaller perforations. Guard, tang, and pommel are fully preserved.
Especially notable is the pommel. It is two-piece and shows a clearly visible constructive seam between the lower pommel part and the fitted cap. On the side surface there are two symmetrically arranged locations that very likely relate to the original rivet fixation of the pommel cap. Comparable two-piece and riveted pommels are known from various Viking-age sword types.
Typologically, the piece can be classified within the 9th–10th century AD. The scabbard form shows parallels to swords of the Petersen-H/I/V group or related Viking-age forms. Comparable pieces are known from Scandinavia, the Baltic region, as well as the Varangian-Rus cultural circle.

The comparatively low weight of around one kilogram at 91 cm total length indicates an originally well-balanced construction.
Condition:
Archaeological preservation state with clear corrosion, encrustations and minor material losses. The characteristic shapes of blade, guard, tang and pommel are still well preserved. The grip has no modern addition. The surface has not been reconstructed or artificially supplemented.
Provenance:
The sword comes from the dissolution of a private collection in southern Germany, which had been assembled as early as the 1960s.
The sword was acquired by the current owner in 1995 and has been in his collection ever since.
An impressive and collectible example of a Viking-age sword with an interesting two-piece pommel construction and a long-standing southern German collection history.
