English document chest from the 19th century, made of wood, with richly carved floral openwork decoration on the lid, in good antique condition; dimensions 24 x 31 x 13 cm.
Description from the seller
English Document Chest – 19th Century – richly carved floral decoration – wooden chest with decorative fittings
A particularly beautiful and richly executed English document chest from the 19th century, made of warm-toned wood and equipped with a striking carved decorative panel on the lid. The sturdy construction, refined wood joints and rich decoration make this an attractive example of 19th-century English furniture craftsmanship.
The lid is dominated by a recessed panel with openwork and carved floral motifs. Flowers, leaves and tendrils form a symmetrical composition around a central oval medallion. The dark background adds depth and beautifully brings the wood carving to the fore.
The construction itself also deserves attention. The visible wood joints at the corners have deliberately remained an integral part of the design, while the profiled lower edge and protruding corner feet give the chest a stately look. On the front there is a light-colored keyplate, which nicely contrasts with the warm hue of the wood.
Such chests were used for storing documents, correspondence and other personal possessions, but were by their decorative execution simultaneously produced as a representative interior object.
