A 19th-century English mahogany document box with a keyed lock, brass fittings and multiple vertical document compartments.
Description from the seller
English mahogany document box – 19th century
A fine English document box from the 19th century, made of mahogany and originally intended for the orderly storage of letters, documents and correspondence.
The rectangular box has a sober and sturdy design, with the warm color and natural grain of the mahogany nicely coming into their own. The front features a lock with key, while the top can be opened via brass hinges.
What is special is the practical interior with multiple vertical compartment divisions for sorting documents. At the front there is also a fold-down panel with slots, making the different compartments easily accessible. The brass fittings and simple construction fit the functional character of such English document- and correspondence boxes.
A characterful 19th-century utilitarian object that is not only interesting as a collection piece, but also still practically usable for storing papers and correspondence because of the various compartments.
