Wall coat rack in solid wood and brass, Umbertine style, dating to 1890–1920.
Description from the seller
Large Wall-Mounted Entrance Coat Rack in Solid Wood and Brass – Umbertine Style / Early 20th Century
Exclusive and imposing wall coat rack (or entrance paneling boiserie), superb testimony of Italian cabinetmaking from the late 19th century / early 20th century (full Umbertine period or early 20th century).
This refined piece of furniture is entirely made of excellent quality solid wood (presumably walnut or stained chestnut), characterized by a warm and deep dark tone that highlights the natural veins of the wood.
The structure presents a classic and rigorous architectural line:
At the top rises a substantial molded cap-like frame, typical of noble furnishings of the era.
Right below is a practical scarf/hat rack shelf, supported laterally by two sturdy curved tubular supports in solid brass.
The central body is divided into elegant geometric paneling with raised coffers, framed by raised geometric profiles.
The base rests on a protruding wooden plinth, solid and well squared.
Hardware details
The coat rack is equipped with 5 majestic double coat hooks (with a long upper hook and a lower ring for umbrellas or bags) made in cast/brushed brass with a distinctly antique charm. The hardware bears a beautiful patina of age.
State of conservation
The piece presents in good structural condition and overall conservative state, solid and ready to be mounted. Being an authentic antique, it shows the normal and fascinating signs of time that attest to its history:
On the left side profile of the wood there are some superficial abrasions and traces of white paint/wall plaster (easily removable with light restoration or cleaning).
The top surface of the shelf and the base display a natural patina from use and age-related dust.
Some screws securing the brass hooks have been partially replaced over time for maintenance (as visible in the detailed photos, some hooks have newer slotted screws and others have period-correct screws).
A piece of great character, perfect for enhancing the entrances of historic residences and farmhouses, as well as as a contrasting element in modern lofts with industrial or eclectic design.
