Description from the seller
Germany. Westphalia. 100 Mark. 1923.
- Value: 100 Mark.
- Year: 1923.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: ANNETTE VON DROSTE-HÜLSHOFF · 1797–1848 · ANNETTE DROSTE-HÜLSHOFF. Reverse: NOTGELD · PROVINCE OF WESTPHALIA · 100 MARK · 1923.
- Grading: UNC Details (NGC).
Coin issued as Notgeld by the Prussian Province of Westphalia during the German hyperinflation of 1923. The obverse features the portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (1797-1848), one of the most important German writers and poets, depicted in profile with an elegant sculptural treatment and surrounded by her name and biographical dates. The reverse shows the prancing horse, Westphalia’s traditional symbol, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the name of the province, the face value of 100 Mark, and the issue date. The specimen retains much of the original detail and surfaces with an attractive appearance, although it has been graded by NGC as UNC Details due to a cleaning process (Cleaned), a circumstance that affects the numismatic certification without obscuring the excellent condition of the reliefs. This issue is part of the well-known Westphalia Notgeld series, minted to alleviate the cash shortage during the 1923 hyperinflation crisis, constituting a notable historical testimony of one of the most severe monetary episodes of the 20th century.
Disclaimer: For orders shipped outside the European Union, I want to make absolutely clear that I do ship from Spain, which means that if the package is sent to any country outside the European Union, and/or inside the EU that has a special tax agreement (example: Canary Islands), it might be stopped at your local customs and they might ask you to pay taxes. This is a customs legal procedure and it is completely out of our control. Thanks for your understanding.
