Description from the seller
This exceptional figural display bowl was made around 1910 by the renowned porcelain manufacturer von Schierholz Plaue in Thuringia. The expertly designed object combines the distinctive features of the manufactory: finely modeled figures, rich Rocaille decoration, pierced forms, elaborately crafted rose appliqués, and elegant gold festoons.
In the center is a pierced bowl held by a gallant couple in historical attire. The depiction draws on the popular Rococo theme for which Schierholz became internationally known. Particularly noteworthy are the three-dimensionally wrought rose festoons that surround the bowl and were carefully hand-sculpted and painted. The base is further adorned with musical instruments, a music book, and other decorative elements, creating a romantic, festive scene.
Inside the bowl lies a finely wrought bouquet of flowers in polychrome painting. The combination of delicate openwork, sculptural blossoms, and figural design makes this piece an impressive example of German porcelain art from the early 20th century.
The von Schierholz Plaue porcelain manufactory was one of the most important makers of decorative luxury porcelains of its time and exported its wares worldwide. Comparable figural bowls with rose appliqués today rank among the sought-after collector’s items of the manufactory.
The piece shows age-related wear of the gilding. The flowers and leaves are in very good condition. 2 minimal chips on the leaves.
