Description from the seller
Spectacular gilded-bronze church candlestick with a tall spike in neo-Gothic style - 19th century - Belgium - Ghent - Probably Maison Bourdon, a very renowned goldsmith house;
The ornate openwork high architecture reproduces the Gothic vocabulary: pinnacles, lancets, fleurs-de-lis, and crenellated dais. In the center sits a winged angel holding a red enamel shield, adorned with heraldic and ecclesiastical motifs.
The enamel shield held by the angel bears ecclesiastical emblems, notably an arm holding a episcopal crozier, which may evoke the old arms of Hoegaarden and its historic link with the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, though attribution remains to be confirmed.
The polygonal base is particularly remarkable, resting on three recumbent lions each holding a shield. One bears the Gothic monogram IHS. The upper part, also openwork, is surmounted by a long spike intended to receive a candle.
Fine craftsmanship and a very decorative overall ensemble, typical of the neo-Gothic revival of goldsmithing and liturgical furniture in the 19th century.
Material: gilded bronze, enameled elements
Era: 19th century, probably second half
Style: Neo-Gothic
Goldsmith: Maison Bourdon (tentative)
Height: 82 cm
Overall good condition considering age, with wear and gilding alterations, signs of use and oxidation, particularly at the upper receptacle.
Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
