Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
An Italian table from the early 20th century in antique Louis XV style with ornamental marquetry and an internal music box mechanism, measuring 60 cm high by 50 cm wide by 35 cm deep, in acceptable, heavily used condition with possibly missing minor parts, and dating to 1940–1950.
Description from the seller
It is an Italian table from the early 20th century that still preserves that artisanal charm so characteristic of ornamental marquetry, where the wood becomes a narrative surface and each inlaid piece seems placed with almost musical intention. In the center, the marquetry unfolds a meticulous, balanced, and rhythmic decorative motif, typical of Italian workshops that, in the early decades of the century, continued reinterpreting tradition with a softer, more domestic language.
The structure, compact and elegant, reveals its old function: this table was designed to house an internal music box, a mechanism that turned the furniture into a small sonic theatre. Although today it needs adjustments to restore its operation, the presence of that system adds historical and emotional value, recalling a time when furniture not only decorated but also surprised, entertained, and accompanied daily life.
The top, with its worn lock and hinges, shows the passage of time and ongoing use. The hinges require repair, but their deterioration also speaks of the piece’s life: hands that opened it, melodies that resonated, an object that was more than furniture.
Taken together, it is a table that combines ornamental marquetry, mechanical ingenuity, and Italian tradition—a piece that deserves to be restored to recover both its beauty and its former musical function.
