Description from the seller

Large, wood-carved and framed figurine of a Christ Child, presumably from the South German-Alpine region, 18th century

The expressive figure shows the Christ Child in a lively, dynamic pose with arms widely outstretched and knees bent. Particularly noteworthy is the finely modeled face with inlaid glass eyes, a slightly open mouth and vividly carved, curly hair.

The figure is carved from wood and has an older polychrome finish. On the upper body as well as on the drapery parts there are clear remnants of gilding. The surface shows a pronounced, long-developed age patina with craquelure, abrasions and partial loss of finish.

On the back side the woodworking craftsmanship and clear tool marks are visible. There is also an older iron suspension eye. Smaller drill holes and old bite marks are also present.

The figure is in an aged, markedly aged condition. The finish and gilding show numerous flaking, losses and abrasions. One finger on one hand is broken off; the original broken-off piece is however present and will, of course, be supplied. It was deliberately not reattached in order to avoid improper intervention and to entrust any potential professional restoration to the future owner.

The existing signs of aging and damage are documented in detail in the photographs. I have not restored or revised the figure.

Material: carved wood, polychrome finish, partial gilding, inlaid glass eyes
Dimensions: approx. 47 × 37 × 16 cm
Weight: 1.2 kg
Condition: moderately aged, with finish losses and the described damages

The figure comes from the estate of Martin Unfried. Further information on earlier provenance is not known.

An expressive historic sacred wood sculpture with especially appealing face, glass eyes, remnants of the old gilding and an authentically aged surface.
